Great Pacific Garbage Patch

We recently came across an amazing video, which is part of a larger project called Midway Film.

Midway Island, which is roughly equidistant between North America and Asia, is thousands of kilometers away from any civilization. Yet, it does not remain the way nature intended it to be.

It is part of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area called so due to the exceptionally high concentrations of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. These particles often end up in the stomach of marine birds and animals such as the Albatross and Sea Turtles, killing them eventually.

Please see the video to understand the graveness of the issue. Do you think we could have taken steps to avoid this.
